Freeport/Lucaya, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas is really very close to the US thereby allowing ease of access. Most folks don't realize just how close we are to South Florida - just about 70 miles! Many boaters will travel in their vessels from West Palm, Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. We have even had guests from further points of departure.
For those who prefer not to fly -- then travel by car, train or bus to Ft. Lauderdale and take Discovery Cruise Lines. http://www.discoverycruiselines.com Discovery offers round trip passage at affordable rates (competitive to airfare for the same distance), and includes meals on board and entertainment. Passage to Grand Bahama Island departs in the morning and arrives in the early afternoon. Return passage to US departs in the late afternoon and arrives 10-11pm. Times vary with schedule but expect a cruise of 5-6 hours. Breakfast and lunch are served during passage to Grand Bahama Island and dinner is served on return passage to Ft. Lauderdale. Entertainment, a casino while at sea, swimming pool and more available during cruise. You may also book a cabin for an additional fee where you can sleep and rest during passage. There are other options you can purchase but none are necessary to purchase the basic fare.
Currently not running until at least fall! There is a new Cat service between Ft. Lauderdale and Freeport. This is much faster (under 2 hours one way) and a smooth ride in light of the vessels unique features. It departs Ft. Lauderdale daily at 4pm, arriving Freeport, Grand Bahama at 6pm and departs Grand Bahama at 10am arriving in Ft. Lauderdale at noon. Service is daily and fares are competitive.
Several airlines have begun offering direct flights (and easy connections with full size planes) into Grand Bahama Island including U.S. Airways via serveral cities. Dulles, Pittsburgh, Charlotte and we expect more to be scheduled. Most major airlines offer service into West Palm (PBI), Ft. Lauderdale (FLL) or Miami (MIA) airports. From there several airlines offer connecting flights into Freeport/Lucaya, Grand Bahama Island (FPO).
Continental is offering direct flights out of Newark!
Among the various airlines here are a few that offer the short flight to Grand Bahama (20-40 mins from the above South Florida departure points) as well as direct or new connecting service in major cities:

Lakers Air Ltd. (daily from Ft. Lauderdale)
Many are smaller aircraft with Continental having mainly Beeches that seat 18 and American with Saabs of average seating of 50. If you prefer a jet then try Lakers out of Ft. Lauderdale offering daily service aboard a jet for the short trip. (Laker does sell just straight air tickets from and to Ft. Lauderdale)
Laker and Air Tran http://www.airtran.com also offer direct flights from other parts of the country. Laker's flights tend to be limited for number of seats assigned air only in preference of selling seats to passengers partaking in hotel packages including the air.
Air Tran offers direct jet service from Atlanta to Grand Bahama and offers a number of connecting flights to many US cities. All flights connect in Atlanta to allow for the transfer to and from the Bahamas bound flights. Visit Air Tran online to find the closest gate to you.
From London to Grand Bahama Island there is direct service offered by JMC http://www.jmc.com
